ArtWorks Announces New Artistic Advisor

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

The Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools is pleased to announce that Oliver Prezant has been selected to serve as Artistic Advisor for ArtWorks, an aesthetic education program for public elementary school students and teachers.  As Artistic Advisor, Prezant will help select the art resources, train and mentor ArtWorks Teaching Artists, and ensure the high artistic standards of the program are maintained.

“We are so thrilled to have someone with Oliver’s extensive background and multiple talents providing important artistic guidance to a program that teachers and students find so valuable,” said Marcy Litzenberg, chair of the Partners in Education Board of Directors.

ArtWorks trains local artists in the fields of poetry, dance, music, theater and the visual arts to lead classroom workshops focused on a ‘live’ experience with a work of art.  Through ArtWorks, hundreds of students each year enjoy artist-led classroom workshops that awaken their imagination and prepare them to journey to performing arts venues and museums.  After the artistic field trips, students return to the classroom to reflect on the experience and to try their hand at artistic expression with the assistance and inspiration of the Teaching Artist.

In addition to his part-time duties as ArtWorks Artistic Advisor, Prezant is a lecturer and educator for The Santa Fe Opera and Music Director of the Santa Community Orchestra.  For many years, he was a faculty member in the Contemporary Music Program at The College of Santa Fe.  Prezant has served as a Teaching Artist for ArtWorks since the program began in 2001.

Prezant replaces Lorraine Schechter who provided artistic oversight for ArtWorks from 2003-10.  Under Schechter’s guidance, ArtWorks grew to serve almost 2,000 students a year with thoughtful, in-depth programming in music, theater, dance, poetry and the visual arts.

ArtWorks was started by the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission in response to requests from parents and teachers for more formal arts programming for local students.  The Arts Commission modeled ArtWorks after a program at New York City’s Lincoln Center Institute which emphasizes artist-led classroom workshops involving inquiry, reflection, art-making and artistic field trips so students can benefit from direct experiences with professional works of art.

In spring 2010, ArtWorks became a program of the Partners in Education Foundation.  Sabrina Pratt, Executive Director of the Arts Commission, and City Arts Commissioners continue to provide valuable support to the program.

ArtWorks is supported by private donations and by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Santa Fe, and numerous local foundations.
